IIn a small town constantly battered by the cold, there lived an old Wiseman. His disciples adored him and many trusted him blindly.
He was not known by the masses and he had no school: he had always remained in the town with his students, living in trusting harmony with them. However, everyone who knew him considered him to be the wisest man in the world. His disciples always said: “«I would never change my master for anyone greater or more famous».”
One day, a student asked him:
«Master, you are probably the wisest of all men: why don’t you leave this town and found a school? Thousands of students would be able to hear your teachings.»
The master replied:
«Would fame make me a better master?
If I talked with thousands of disciples every day would my words still touch your heart?
Would you trust me if you didn’t really know me and see how I am inside?
If, in your eyes, I did not seem reliable, would I be useful to you?»
